Tanya Zuckerbrot, M.S., R.D., is the author of The F-Factor Diet. She is a nutritionist with offices in Miami and New York City.
Last week I attended an event in which one of Ms. Zuckerbrots' assistant presented the philosophy behind the book. After reading the book, I must say that I can see why her clients are successful in losing weight and keeping it off. The F-Factor focuses on incorporating and making fiber the focus in your daily eating plan.
One of the reasons that I really think this is a good plan is, it does not eliminate any food groups ever. It allows for good fresh foods and desserts. The second reason is, the recipes are simple and utilizes ingredients that are probably already in your cabinet.
What I disagree on about The F-Factor is, that Splenda is allowed as a sugar substitute. My observation is, use the real thing. Real sugar is not made with artificial man made ingredients. I also think that the breakfast choices should have more protein and less

Overall, it is a good eating plan for someone that is looking loose weight with doable guidelines.

This month is Breast cancer* Awareness Month. I’d like to remind you, if you haven’t already, to give yourself your monthly self examination and please schedule your annual mammogram. Regular self examination in conjunction with annual screening is the best defense for early detection.

Also, minimize the risk by living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise and meditate regularly, cut out processed foods, sugar, high fat foods, and, limit alcohol intake.

Before we know it, the holiday season will be underway and we’ll want to fit into chic festive attire. So, it is time to start with a clean slate. By that I mean it is time to detox your body.
There are several methods of detox. There is the mild method where you go to the spa and get manual lymphatic drainage massage and body wraps. This can be very expensive depending on the type of package that the spa has put together. A second method is to utilize a combination of yoga and a very healthy diet that i

For some people exercising isn’t an activity they enjoy. I always enjoy my workouts. You want to know my secret? I have a fitness database. As discussed in the previous post, workouts should be fun. The following is a list of activities that will get and keep you in tip top shape fast and all year long.

1.Yoga – Depending on which discipline you choose, you can burn between 350 and 600 calories per hour class.

2.Pilates –Tightens and tones your entire body and gives you the set of abs that you’ve dreamed of for years because the basis of each movement is centered around your core. Further, it’s good for your posture.

3.Ballet Class – If you want awesome calves and a bootylicious bottom line... ballet will do it.

4.Walking – Total body workout. Be sure to include plenty of hills as walking shapes the entire leg but most important, your heart is getting a good workout too!

5.Karate Class – Total body workout and, it will introduce muscles to you that you didn’t know that you had, Wow!

6.Bike Riding – Total body workout - Be sure to stretch before and after the ride. Also, include push-ups and tri-cep dips. If you don’t own a bike or just don’t want to ride outside, take spinning at the local health club or YMCA.

7.Salsa or Flamingo Dance Class – One of the best workouts to shape and tone your entire body. Most flamingo dancers I know have the most toned arms I’ve seen!

Add these moves to your fitness database 3 to 4 times per week, and you’ll look forward to “working out” because you’ll be having so much fun!

Have A Sparkling Day!

You know the drill. We make a resolution to become more organized, eat better, workout that recommended 3 times per week. Then bang! One month out of the gate and it’s all over. Our best wellness intentions have gone astray because, well…life got in the way. What if we just take it one month at a time? Each month, focus on doing and learning something new that will get you on track for the entire year. Sound good? Great! Let’s make 2008 our most healthy and beautiful year yet!

Beauty Tip – The New England weather can be brutal on skin and hair. Be sure to drink plenty of water and moisturize from head to toe. Use the appropriate moisturizer for your facial skin type. For example, if you have combination skin, you may like to try All You Need by Prescriptives. For body moisturizing, nothing beats Decleor’s System Corps. It is packed with essentials oils and it leaves you feeling smooth as silk.

Health Tip – Go green and get smart – Focus on incorporating a variety of dark green vegetables like kale, arugula and chard. Add salmon and brown rice and you’ve got yourself a very healthy and smart lunch or dinner.

               Greetings!

The holiday season is in full swing and I hope that you’re enjoying it to the fullest!!!

With all of the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to move your fitness and healthy eating habits to the back burner. The best holiday gift you can give yourself is to schedule your workout time just as you would an afternoon meeting or evening party. I schedule my workout time early in the day. This way I’ve no excuse and don’t feel guilty when enjoying the delicious foods of the season.

The holiday look of the season is high style, gold and glitter, glitter, glitter. From little sequin tops and pencil skirts, to super shinny lips! Gold is the IT color this season. Nars lip gloss, Sunset Strip, is the right combination of gold, peach and glitter to give your lips sparkle and allure. Give your skin a super sexy glow with Nars’ Body Glow. $59.00 The rich blend of the Monoï de Tahiti oil combined with a rich chocolate shimmer for glowing, healthy and naturally fragrant skin.

If you really want the exceptional look for the season, then it is the Givenchy Christmas Collection that you’re after. It’s the very something special that will get you noticed. This collection revolves around a woman’s best friend. Diamonds! This is the crème de la crème of any holiday make-up collection. The Limited edition includes, an extreme pure diamond black mascara, crystal lip gloss (my favorite), pure diamond nail lacquer, all over diamond powder for the body or the eyes and diamond lash sparklers.

Have A Radiant, Healthy, Happy Holiday Season!!!

I’m a makeup artist. What that really means is…I’m a professional makeup junkie and whenever I’m in a store be it Barney’s, Nordstrom or, CVS or Target, I always cruise the beauty department. Here’s what my research uncovered…The look for fall is pure Hollywood glamour. Eyes are dressed in varying depths of silky colors, featuring greys, blues, plums, pinks and browns, creating a bold, sexy, smoldering and mysterious look with lots of shimmer. Complimenting the eyes are sheer and very shiny lips.

Now, as a makeup junkie, it is difficult to be loyal to just one cosmetic line as they all have a little piece of my heart. With that said…M•A•C, NARS, Chanel, Dior, and IMAN rock eye colors that pop even when applied for a less dramatic effect and, I like that because it means less touch-ups!

While the eyes will be the drama queen this season, it’s the lips that will steal the show! Glistening with, subtle color and major sparkle is the look to paint on this season. Once again, my favorites are, M•A•C, NARS, Chanel, Dior, and my CVS find…Revlon. I like the fact that all of the glosses have a complimentary lip-pencil. This way, you can line and fill-in your lips with the pencil for more color that will last twice as long.

The colors this season are deep, mysterious and oh…so sexy! When selecting new colors and revamping your look, it is not necessary to incorporate all of the new trends if they don’t suit your personality.

So, what will your face be wearing this fall?

While there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy, here are my top twenty secrets for extending your summer glow all year long.

Smile! J It releases stress, it’s a natural beauty enhancer, makes you feel good and it’s contagious. Just try smiling at the next person you walk by and see if they don’t smile back. J

Drink Water! Water is not only a great thirst quencher; it will flush toxins from your body and, keep your skin moist which will give a natural glow!

Exercise regularly. Work up a sweat with during cardiovascular and weight bearing fitness routine. This will not only help to remove toxins from your body, when your endorphins kick-in you’ll be on a natural high.

Eat fruits and vegetables that are high in water content. For example, cucumbers, watermelon, dark green leafy vegetables and grapefruit.

Take high quality supplements. A multi-vitamin, calcium, vitamin C, and, a multi-mineral supplement. I prefer to take my supplements in an isotonic form. Istonic supplements are in a powder form. Isotonic means “same pressure as”. This means, because the powder is mixed with 2 oz. of water, the body recognizes this mixture as its own and thus, the break-down time is zero. When supplements are taken in a pill form it takes approximately 2 to 4 hours to break-down and you only receive 10% of the nutrients as opposed to the isotonic mixture where the body receives between 90 to 95% of the supplement.

Get a massage. Professional or from your honey! The human touch is unequivocally the best way to stay healthy and happy. J

Stay Connected. Getting together with family and friends ensures that you’re nurturing your relationships and, are connected to a support group. This is a great way to keep your immune system strong and healthy as well as staving off depression! J

Become a vegetarian for a week. This is a very simple way to detox and give your body a break from needing to work hard to break-down protein.

Get Outside. Spending 10 min a day in the sun gets you the recommended daily vitamin D which assists the body to absorb calcium.

Use sunscreen. Use a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB, and, if you’re heading to the beach or the pool, make sure it’s also waterproof.

Go to school. To keep your body and mind fine tuned you’ve got to keep active! Instead of going to the gym for your usual routine, take up yoga or rock climbing instead. I went for the tae kwon do. This does wonders for your quads and glutes.

Sexercise. Not only does working- up a sweat a make you look good, the real benefit of exercising increases muscle strength and endurance which will increase and prolong playtime in the bedroom. So, be sure to get your groove on in the gym with these specific moves: the kegel, back-extensions, the butterfly stretch and crunches. Won’t your sweetie be surprised at your new moves!

Eat Chocolate. Organic dark chocolate is said to be filled with antioxidants that fight free radicals. Yum! J

Volunteer. Getting involved in the community to help others in need does wonders for your spirit. And, the added benefit is connecting with like-minded people. And this is priceless.

Limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

Drink Tea. Green tea is full of antioxidants that are said to fight cancer and guard the body from free radicals. Ginger tea is great for digestion and strengthening the immune system. And Roobios (ROY-boys) tea is a tea from South Africa and is said to have fifty percent more antioxidants and health benefits than green tea.

Seasonal detox. (Please read the June blog)

Take a luxurious bath. Create a spa oasis by setting the mood with your favorite sexy music and scented candles. And soak in sea salt and lavender essential oils. Oh-la-la!

Meditate. Getting quiet for an hour a day helps to manage stress and keeps you focused. It is noted that deep breathing along with meditation helps strengthen the immune system.
